Yercaud hill station, nestled in the Shivaroy Hills of Tamil Nadu, is a hill station in the Eastern Ghats drowned in infinite greenery. This territory had a history during British times and was usually called the ‘Ooty of the poor.’ It is situated at a height of 4970 feet and is well known for its vast coffee plantation and great weather.

How to reach the land of seven forests Yercaud

Tourists can visit Yercaud hill station through any transportation medium like by air, bus, and by rail. The nearest airport is Trichy, situated around 163 km away from Yercaud. You can take a taxi or car from the airport to reach Yercaud. Buses also run from south India place to Yercaud so you can easily get here.

Agriculture and Festival of the Yercaud

Another major source of income at Yercaud is agriculture with coffee. In 1820 coffee was first cultivated on “Grange Estate” when coffee plants were bought from Africa to Yercaud by Mr. M.D.Cockburn.

The greatest summer festival is held during the middle of May when the annual celebration of Lord Servarayan takes place. So it is the presiding deity of the Shevory Hills. There are seven days of an exhibition held where dog shows, flower shoes, boating races, and a village fair are celebrated.

Trekker’s Paradise

Yercaud is well known as the name of “Land of 7 forests,” located at an altitude of 1515 meters above sea level. The place had lots of coffee fields, citrus fruits, bananas, and pine trees are all constituents of forests in and around Yercaud hill station. So trekking through all these is a wonderful experience for tourists.

Demography of Yercaud

According to the census period of 2001, the place Yercaud has approximately 40,000 population around it. Most Tribal people live in Yercadu, as the population of the tribal is 24,449. They are not original tribals but migrated from Kanchipuram about 500 years ago. The languages spoken in Yercadu are English and Tamil.

Flora and Fauna

The eastern ghats of Yercaud have a treasure trove of glorious flora and fauna. The place’s name comes from the Tamil word yeri, which means lake, and kaadu which means forest. It is the home of the popular National Orchidarium and Botanical garden covering 18.4 hectares and having trees like pears and oranges. Apart from this, the place has many wildlife species, deer, jackals, peacocks, etc., and Killiyur falls the enchanting destination of Yercaud.

The most appealing aspect of Yercaud is that its big natural lake is well known as Emerland Lake. Amazing cloud-peaked hills surround the lake and well-flourishing gardens on its banks; the lake is also a feast for the eyes.

There is a floating fountain on the lake, and you can also enjoy a boating facility at a reasonable rate on the lake. You can choose both self-driving and rowing boats according to your comfort.

Pagoda Point

The Pagoda Point is situated in the eastern part of the Yercaud hill station. It is a beautiful point where you can see the neighboring village as well. The piles of stones around the mountains show a pyramid view that is giving Pagoda a unique name. It is believed that the stones are placed here by local tribes.

In the middle of Pagoda, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Rama. Tourists could fall in love with the natural beauty of the place and the scenic view of the mountains’ greenery.

Botanical Garden

Any tourists who are interested in learning about god’s gifted planet and amazing flora and various plant species. So they must make a trip to Yercaud Botanical Garden Which amazed them with its natural beauty. Botanical garden, where popular Kuriniji flowers bloom in the area, and flower specialty only bloomed once a year. Many orchids are blooms here, which is ranked the third largest of all India’s orchidariums.

The falls drop from a height of 300 feet and are a famous destination amongst tourists near Salem. Tourists can also do boating and swim in this vicinity, and the waterfalls are part of the Shervaroyan Hills range. The water from Yercaud lake falls here from 300 feet, so it is forming the falls. The falls also have an area for resting and walking around it and watching alluring natural beauty.

 

Bear’s Cave

It is placed on a private coffee estate near the Norton bungalow nearest the Shervaroyan temple. The Bear’s Cave name is derived from the coffee estate as, besides coffee estates, lots of bears live here. Apart from this, it is a private estate, and its owner is kind, so it is open to the public. The most enchanting view to see is from 7 feet below the ground. The place offers you both a coffee plantation and a bear’s cave at one time.

From a tourist point of view,

The best time to visit Yercaud is from October to June because the weather is dry and cool. However, the place offers you a picturesque view of the adventurous area and activities around the site. So you can fully enjoy the place with great enchantment. Due to heavy rainfall in summer, the place is not visitable. Food and staying facilities are easily available here at an affordable price. The place enthralls your soul, and you got many glimpses of the areas in Yercaud.
