The Jagannath Rath Yatra refers to the Chariot Festival of Puri as the largest annual procession in India. The deities (Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra) are taken to Gundicha Temple (the abode of their aunt), 3 km away, in three wooden chariots, namely: Nandighosha (Jagannath), Taladhwaja (Balabhadra), and Darpadalana (Subhadra). The crowds move across the city of Puri as the devotees pull the chariots across the crowded streets- it is the one occasion on which the idols leave their sanctum, welcoming all comers, even non-Hindus.

    A Brief History

    • Origins: The festival dates back to the 12th to the 16th century, with its ancient roots in local traditions as well as the return of Krishna to the town of his aunt
    • Earlier accounts: Travelogues of the 1320s (such as that of Odoric of Pordenone) report that the people and the king pulled the chariots sight was so amazing that the English even adopted the word into their language: juggernaut.
    • Royal Patronage: Royal Patronage The festival was formalized by the Gajapati kings of Odisha ca. 1150 AD, giving it great ritual significance

    Religious and Cultural Significance

    • Love & Equality. It is considered taboo that pulling the chariots leads to the purification of all the sins and the liberation of all the misfortunes that people have. The performance is a very strong sign: the rich and poor, the old and the young, the spiritual action is one. Even the King of Puri is at the service of sweeping the chariot track, and this work is known as Chhera Pahara, which is a very memorable work because of its simplicity.
    • Spiritual Journey, figuratively, the Yatra symbolizes a journey of the soul to attain salvation. It is perceived as a celestial journey, as Lord Krishna was also traveling from Gokul to Mathura and reuniting with devotees
    • Cultural Wholeness and Inclusion Rath Yatra overcomes all the boundaries of caste, creed, and religion. Its universal message is emphasized with mythical tales such as a Muslim believer, Salabega, being a recipient of the tribute of the chariot.

The Role of the Three Deities – Jagannath, Balabhadra & Subhadra

    2

The Function of the Three Gods

    • Lord Jagannath, an incarnation or form of Lord Vishnu/ Krishna. The tallest among them is his chariot Nandighosha (18 wheels, 45 ft tall), which represents the pursuit of mind and spiritual meaning
    • Lord Balabhadra, His elder brother, Jagannath, is filled with strength, dharma, and fertility. His chariot, Taladhwaja (14 wheel), is symbolic of the physical self and ethical stability
    • Goddess Subhadra, their sister, meaning of good fortune, protection, and kindness. Her chariot, Darpadalana (12 wheels), is symbolic of the heart and emotional love
